Overview of BOPP Packaging Film

Overview of BOPP Packaging Film

BOPP film has the advantages of light weight, non-toxic, odorless, moisture-proof, high mechanical strength, stable size, good printing performance, high airtightness, good transparency, reasonable price, and low pollution, and is known as the “queen of packaging”. The application of BOPP film has reduced the use of paper packaging materials in society and strengthened the protection of forest resources.

The birth of BOPP film quickly drove the transformation of the packaging materials industry and began to be widely used in packaging for food, medicine, daily necessities, and other products. With the accumulation of technological foundation, BOPP film has been endowed with electrical, magnetic, optical, high temperature resistance, low temperature resistance, barrier, air conditioning, antibacterial and other functions on the basis of packaging function in recent years. Functional BOPP film is increasingly being used in industries such as electronics, medical, and construction.

1、 Plastic film

Comparison of application fields of plastic film, taking CPP, BOPP and ordinary PP film as examples.

CPP: The product has the characteristics of transparency, softness, barrier properties, and good mechanical adaptability. It is resistant to high temperature cooking (cooking temperature above 120 ℃) and low temperature heat sealing (heat sealing temperature less than 125 ℃). Mainly used as an inner substrate for composite packaging of food, candies, local specialties, cooked foods (suitable for sterilization packaging), frozen products, seasonings, soup ingredients, etc., it can extend the shelf life of food and increase its aesthetic appeal. It can also be used for the surface and interlayer of stationery products, and can also be used as auxiliary film, such as photo and collectible loose leaf, labels, etc.

BOPP: It has excellent printing performance, can be compounded with paper, PET and other substrates, has high clarity and glossiness, excellent ink absorption and coating adhesion, high tensile strength, excellent oil and grease barrier properties, low static electricity characteristics, etc. It is widely used in the field of printing composites and also serves as a packaging material in tobacco and other industries.
Blow extruded film IPP: Due to its simple process and low cost, its optical performance is slightly lower than CPP and BOPP. It is mainly used for packaging Dim sum, bread, textiles, folders, record cases, sports shoes, etc.

Among them, the composite performance of BOPP and CPP is improved, and their applications are wider. After composite, they have moisture resistance, transparency, and stiffness, and can be used for packaging dry foods such as peanuts, fast food, chocolate, pastries, etc. In recent years, the types and types of packing film in China have gradually increased, each with its own strengths. With the continuous improvement of technology and processes, the prospects of packaging films are broad.

2、 Common knowledge about BOPP film

Light film: BOPP ordinary film, also known as light film, is the most widely used product in BOPP products. The light film itself is a waterproof plastic film, and by covering it with a light film, the surface of the label material that was originally not waterproof can be made waterproof; The light film makes the surface of the label sticker brighter, appear more upscale, and attract attention; Light film can protect the printed ink/content, making the label surface scratch resistant and more durable. Therefore, optical films are widely used in various printing, food, and item packaging applications.

Features: The film itself has waterproof properties; The light film makes the surface of the label shiny; Light film can protect the printed content.

Usage: Printed items; Packaging of food and items.

Matte film: also known as matte film, mainly achieves the effect of extinction by absorbing and scattering light. It can generally improve the grade of printed appearance, but the price is relatively high, and there are few domestic manufacturers, so it is often used in boxed food or high-end packaging. Matte films often lack heat sealing layers, so they are often used in combination with other packing film roll such as CPP and BOPET.
Features: It can make the coating present a matte effect; The price is relatively high; No heat sealing layer.
Purpose; Boxed videos; High end packaging.

Pearlescent film: mostly a 3-layer co extruded stretch film, with a heat sealing layer on the surface, commonly seen in chopstick bags, where the pearl film has its own heat sealing layer, resulting in a section of heat sealing cross-section. The density of pearl film is mostly controlled below 0.7, which is beneficial for cost savings; Moreover, common pearl films exhibit a white and opaque pearl effect, which has a certain degree of light blocking ability and provides protection for products that require light avoidance. Of course, pearl film is often used in combination with other films for food and daily necessities, such as ice cream, chocolate packaging, and beverage bottle labels.
Features: The surface generally has a heat sealing layer; The density is mostly below 0.7; Presenting a white, semi transparent pearl effect; Has a certain degree of light blocking ability.
Usage: Food packaging; Beverage bottle label.

Aluminum plated film: Aluminum plated film is a composite flexible packaging material formed by coating a very thin layer of metallic aluminum on the surface of plastic film using a special process. The most commonly used processing method is vacuum aluminum plating, which gives the plastic film surface a metallic luster. Due to its characteristics of both plastic film and metal, it is a cheap, beautiful, high-performance, and practical packaging material mainly used for dry and puffed food packaging such as biscuits, as well as outer packaging of some pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.
Features: The film surface has a very thin layer of metallic aluminum; The surface has a metallic luster; It is a cost-effective, aesthetically pleasing, high-performance, and highly practical composite flexible packaging material.
Usage: Packaging for dry and puffed foods such as biscuits; Packaging for pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.

Laser film: Using technologies such as computer dot matrix lithography, 3D true color holography, and multiplex and dynamic imaging, holographic images with rainbow dynamic and three-dimensional effects are transferred onto BOPP film. It is resistant to ink erosion, has high water vapor barrier ability, and can better resist static electricity. Laser film is relatively less produced in China and requires certain production technology. It is generally used for high-end product anti-counterfeiting, decorative packaging, etc., such as cigarette, drug, food and other packaging boxes.
Features: Resistant to ink erosion, high ability to block water vapor; Can better resist static electricity.
Usage: Anti counterfeiting packaging for high-end products; Packaging boxes for cigarettes, medicines, food, etc.

3、 Advantages of BOPP film

BOPP film, also known as biaxially oriented polypropylene film, refers to a film product prepared from high molecular weight polypropylene through stretching, cooling, heat treatment, coating and other processes. According to different performance, BOPP film can be divided into ordinary BOPP film and functional BOPP film; According to different purposes, BOPP film can be divided into cigarette packaging film, metalized film, pearl film, matte film, etc.

Advantages:BOPP film is colorless, odorless, non-toxic, and has advantages such as high tensile strength, impact strength, rigidity, toughness, and good transparency. BOPP film needs to undergo corona treatment before coating or printing. After corona treatment, BOPP film has good printing adaptability and can achieve exquisite appearance effects through color matching printing. Therefore, it is commonly used as a surface layer material for composite films.
